Not really!
I think the closest I ever came to this was back in 1998. Mr. FG and I were at the mall one night, and Stevie Wonder came walking by.
We left him alone, so I didn’t actually meet him.
But there was a guy in the mall who realized who had walked by, and he turned around and started running down the mall after Stevie Wonder.
I totally understand wanting to meet a celebrity, but I can also understand that a celebrity would really want to just walk in the mall without having to meet people.
Mr. FG and I almost saw Johnny Depp back in 2017. We were at Disney in California on our 20th anniversary trip, and we rode Pirates of the Caribbean.
We knew Johnny Depp very, very occasionally stops in at that ride, so of course we strained our eyes to look for him the whole time.
And shortly after we left the ride, we found out he actually did show up that day. Like, an hour after we left the ride.
Oh well. It would have been cool to see him, but at the end of the day, he IS just a person.

In 1964 in high school, I got to interview Jimmy Durante (who’s he, say you young people!) for our school newspaper. He was in town for a performance.
Then in college I had a teaching job interview with Perry Como’s brother…to me that counts.
I love the picture of the cool FG’s. Hoping for good things for you.

Like you, not really. The closest I came was Jerry Springer. Remember him? His show was on ALL THE TIME in my college dorm. My friend and I were in Chicago for our college spring break, walking the path around Lake Michigan, and we passed him walking with a young woman in the opposite direction. We all nodded politely, as one does to passing strangers, and then my friend and I did a classic double take about 20 seconds later. “Was that Jerry Springer? ” Yup. That was it, though.

I met Jonathan Frid (he played Barnabas on that old show, Dark Shadows) back when I was in college. He was scheduled to give a presentation on Shakespeare; nobody came to greet him at the arts building, where I was hanging out with a friend, and the poor guy got lost! We found him wandering the halls. My friend was a huge fan (I had no idea what Dark Shadows was) and she totally fangirled over him. 😀

This is too funny, the New York Times had an article last week titled “Three Reasons I Love Dark Shadows.” That’s the only reason I recognized the name Jonathan Frid. (I was alive during the show’s run, but was a little too young.) Dark Shadows can be found on Amazon Prime Video and Tubi.

My college played host to Elie Wiesel, Oscar Arias and Mariead Maguire, and I got to go to the reception. Elie Wiesel told me all about his grandchildren.

In college my friend and her aunt took me to see a U2 concert in San Francisco. The next day, we driving in the city leaving our hotel and I saw all four I the band members walking and I said from our car, “ Hi Edge! He said, Hi girls! And they all waved. That made our day.

When I was serving in the Army I went to the Christmas tree lighting in Washington,DC. I saw a secret service man a ways away from President Ford and asked him if I could greet the President because he was from my home town. Indeed President Ford shook my hand, thanked me for my service, and thus made my day. How times have changed.

That’s great, Nancy. Things were so different. Thanks for serving your country as you did.

I won a radio contest back in the early 80s and met Rodney Dangerfield. Somewhere I have a photo of me, Rodney, and my boyfriend at the time. It’s a great photo of Rodney and my boyfriend, but a horrid picture of me. The person snapping the photo took way too long and my grin apparently turned into a sneer.

I met Kirk Cameron about 10 years ago. I wish I had put more thought into what to say before I met him. I also met a band once that was maybe famous in its genre, but not in the world. I’ve decided that I hope I never meet a celebrity on a whim because I would probably say something dumb and trip over myself when I should really just leave them alone. Kudos to you on being able to give Stevie Wonder space. 🙂

Oh… I forgot. One of my closest friends could be considered famous! She’s an award-winning author with over 50 published children’s books. I just read a book to my son that she wrote for Disney, which reminded me of her fame. She’s part of my everyday life. She has a book coming out in the spring that Loren Long illustrated and I’m excited to see it!
Karen. says
Oh gosh, Loren Long! We adore Otis! If you feel like you can say the author’s name, I would love to know. 🙂
Ruth T says
I love Otis, too. 🙂 Since she put it out on Facebook and Instagram I’m ok sharing. The author is Lisa Wheeler and her book is “Someone Builds the Dream”. Lisa has written a huge Dino sports series, “Even Monsters Need to Sleep”, “Turk and Runt”, and a number of others that we love. And she’s a fantastic person! 🙂

We’ve read several of these! It might be time for a deep dive. Awesome!

I met the prime minister and president of Turkey when I was director of nursing of American Hospital of Istanbul. At a private party for the 75th anniversary of the hospital had private concert by Roberta Flack and met her. A famously bad person I met when working in a hospital in Saudi Arabia was Idi Amin who was given sanctuary (because he was a Muslim) in that country when run out of Uganda. Very jovial and smiling and friendly!!! Shivers ran down my back.( His 4 wives with him were dressed in the latest Western fashions.)

I was in Las Vegas and had went to show that David Cassidy was hosting. He came and sat down at our table, put his arm around me and asked me how I liked the show.
Mary in VA says
I loved David Cassidy. He and Bobby Sherman were my teenage crushes.

When I was in college Nancy Reagan rode through our campus on her way to speak in support of her husband’s re-election….I guess that dates me! We were so excited & lined the streets with signs, of course she waved at us but we didn’t actually meet her. That’s as close as I’ve ever come….oh I have met Little Debbie! The real Little Debbie – does that count? She was my husband’s boss for awhile until they moved her up in the company. My son has dunked her little brother in a dunking booth! Ha!
My mom met a lot of celebrities. She worked at The Greenbrier hotel in White Sulphur Springs,WV. She was a roll girl in the dining hall & served Shirley Temple, Eisenhower & quite a few more. I wish I could remember now.
Molly F. C. says
Jenny Young, was a roll girl someone who carried breads in a basket and distributed them to waiting diners?

Nora Roberts (author) & John Force (drag racer) Both lovely people!
