Something I fought for recently

“Fought” is probably too strong a word for this, but oh well.

The last two chapter quizzes in my biology class have had…issues. The first one had a blank in the multiple choice options, and none of the remaining options were the correct answer either.

Then on the latest quiz, about 80% of the questions seemed like they were taken from a future chapter in the book; I was literally just guessing the answers.

(And it’s not for lack of studying; I read the chapter several times, did the outline, took the notes, reviewed the slides, did my flashcards, and still this quiz was full of stuff I had never seen before!)

Magnetix toys arranged as a polymer.
Why yes, I did use my kids’ old magnetix toys for a polymer assignment.

Anyway, in both cases, I sent a polite email to the professor to let him know about the problem. And in both cases, my grade got adjusted appropriately.

There are plenty of areas in my life where I have trouble speaking up, but in situations such as these, I have no trouble at all being politely assertive as long as I think my case is valid.

What have you fought for recently?

Like you, “fought” is a strong word for this, but . . . I have been uncharacteristically vocal about online learning for my kids. There has been a learning curve (pun intended) for teachers figuring out how to translate a full-time school situation to Zoom, and it was kind of ugly for awhile there. I talked to every single one of them about it, and let them know that we cannot just do one-to-one swap of classroom hours to a computer. Not even close. My kids were losing it with that. Even after dialing it back a little, the schedules were still nuts for our family of three kids in school. The teachers kept tweaking their schedules until they settled on schedules that involved no more than 1.5 hours of screen time for each kid (less for younger ones) with breaks, and absolutely none in the afternoons. Still not fun when we have to do it, but certainly more reasonable than the original attempts.

It’s hard to explain, but I have sort of recently “fought for” my integrity by not engaging with an online “attacker”. After thinking it through, I decided that it would be worse for me, and for her, if I responded online, even though provoked. I chose to respond privately, gently, and then let it go.

Originally, it was me, writing from a list of daily prompts.

But for the moment, I’m using it to share the small essays I’ve written over the last two years, since my evangelical self left my marriage.

Because I don’t want this to be an internet tabloid, the new posts here are only available to members of my Patreon community.

My main blog is The Frugal Girl, if you’d like to read more of my words! All posts there are free.
